Go Viral on 7 Social Media Marketing Platforms: 2015 Edition

Section 1: The New Social Media Marketing Lecture 1 02:17

Now this is a course on social media marketing but you can almost think of it as like a search engine optimization course at the same time because Google has started focusing more on social media as a determinant in how high your site shows up in the search results.

If you look at the screenshot here, you can see something called the Spearman analysis and this is done by a company called Searchmetrics and what they do is they monitor about 10,000 keywords. They track more than 5 billion backlinks and almost 20 billion social media signals likes, shares, comments, etc.

You'll notice social media makes up 7 of the top 11 rank factors in the search metrics study. So you see at #3 you have Google +1s, #5 facebook shares, #6 total of facebook shares, comments and likes, #7 facebook comments, #8 pinterest pins, #10 facebook likes and #11 is tweets on Twitter.

Now in 2016, it's expected that Google+ is going to fall below facebook in importance as Google pares back its focus on their social media network. However, Google is continuing to push these social signals that are determined by the number of people who enjoy your content more so than other factors on the list.

So like I said this is a course on social media, but it's also a great way to move your site and posts up the rankings.

So the first thing I want to do is walk you through how to set up the social media share buttons so that they're always next to your reader, wherever they go on your website. They follow them down as they're reading the post. They're on the top, on the bottom, they're on the left.

So if your readers get to a certain point where they're enjoying your content and they want to share it with their friends, they don't have to think about it. They don't have to find any social media share buttons. They're right there.

And I only see this on like 20 or 25% of websites but this is an absolutely necessity for getting your business's name out there, for going viral, for being found. And that's really important when it comes to marketing any business, is just for people to know about you.

And there's really no chance of anything going viral on your site without social media share buttons.

So let's take a look at how to set up some free buttons that will always be available whenever your readers want to share or like something.

Lecture 2

The Easiest Way to Make Sure People Share Your Content

03:58Section 2: YouTube Lecture 3 04:04

YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world behind Google and it can be extremely effective as a marketing tool as long as you think of it as a search engine and not just a place to host videos. You know even though it's one of the few platforms online with more than a billion users, it can be a lot easier to rank for than normal search because people don't optimize their videos as well as they optimize their blogs or websites. I'm gonna cover some basics first and then we'll get into how you can attract viewers, optimize your video and improve your ranking within YouTube and Google.

Before Posting

Just a couple things I want to mention before you start creating or uploading videos to YouTube. I've seen a number of studies on video length and If you're going for user attention, you'll want to try to keep your video relatively short. I mean I've seen studies saying anywhere from 60 seconds to 4 minutes is the optimal time, but then I also saw one sort of observational study, it wasn't really based on a ton of data, he said that 5 minutes or more results in a better YouTube ranking so it kinda depends on what you're going for.

This little graph you seen on the screen is from Wistia, a video hosting service and they put this together based on research from tens of thousands of videos that they host and they found out what you probably had already guessed. That The longer a video is, the fewer number of people there are that actually finish it. So you can see, at about the halfway point of a four minute video, half of your audience is gone. So only like 50% of you guys are still here, so that's nice. So you're going to have higher retention rates with videos two minutes or less, but it all depends on what you're going for.

You can't really get an in-depth how-to under two minutes but you could definitely do that with a promo for your brand or a quick tip. If you're looking for higher retention, though, break your long video up into smaller parts. And this basically guarantees that your part 2 and part 3 show up as the top suggestion after they finish the first or second video and it'll give your channel a little more authority. Just don't want to force it under a certain length because you want higher retention. There are a lot of factors that go into your YouTube ranking besides the percentage of the video watched and people are still going to subscribe, share, give you thumbs ups and comment even when they don't watch the whole video.

I just to digress here for a second, I don't agree with this whole notion of people having shorter attention spans now. If you're entertaining people and they enjoy what they're watching, they'll stick around as long as they don't have anything else to do. If you're not, they're going to move onto something else. So regardless of the length, you just wanna keep it engaging. By the way, you're gonna be limited to 15 minute videos until you verify your account. You can do that at

https://www.youtube.com/verify

and all you have to do is have a text message or phone call made to your phone and then you'll be verified and you'll be allowed to choose the thumbnail that displays for your video, make your videos longer than 15 minutes and monetize your videos.

To choose the thumbnail all you have to do is click the option that says Custom Thumbnail as you go to upload a video like you see in the screenshot with the arrow pointing to it.

And the great thing about this is that a YT video shows up with this thumbnail next to it in Google's search results and thumbnails and pictures next to a result tend to increase clicks to your videos significantly even when it's not number 1.

And in a way, getting a thumbnail next to your video is a little like claiming Google Authorship. If you're not familiar, Google Authorship was a way for content writers to get their pictures displayed next to their articles in the Google search results. So if you did a search for something, you would sometimes see articles with Google+ profile pictures next to them. And these pictures tended to increase clickthrough rate or the number of people who clicked on that link, significantly simply because people are attracted to pictures.

So if you were upset about the fact that Google took away this option, YT videos are a way to get your thumbnail to show up next to your piece of content and it's really the only type of content that will show up now in the Google results with a picture next to it. And this is just another great reason to start using YT to promote your business and another reason why it's such a great social media platform.

Lecture 4 04:23

Your ranking, in other words where your video shows up when you search YT depends on a handful of things. First, the title, then description and tags.

It'll be dependent on the number of views but more importantly the percentage of the video that each of these people watch, the number of sites linking to it, people who have favorited it, meaning given it a thumbs up, shares, comments, the number of people who have embedded it on their site and subscriptions, particularly a subscription right after the video ends.

There's a handful of things you can do to get those. First, you wanna make the file name of your uploaded video something with your best keywords in it. For example if we were doing a video on YT marketing, we might make the title YT-marketing-strategies.wmv. Google's search spiders are gonna pick up on this.

Next you wanna optomize your title to attract viewers and basically you're gonna do the same thing you did with the file name but you only get 100 characters for this and the title one of if not the most important thing you do as far as your video goes.

So you wanna remember to use the keywords you wanna rank for first in the title, meaning youtube marketing strategy and tutorial instead of strategy and tutorial for youtube marketing.

But you don't wanna be too broad with your title either. Trying to rank for something like social media is gonna be a lot harder than youtube marketing for small businesses.

What I would recommending doing is a Google search for a word within your niche or whatever keyword you're trying to rank for and Check to see if there's any YT results. Look at your competitors descriptions and tags and see what words they're using around.

Then go to adwords.google.com and then you click tools at the top and go down to the Google Keyword Planner. See if they have a decent amount of monthly search volume but low competition maybe 500 or more monthly searches. If so, you might consider using Google's recommendations as well as your competitors keywords and tags

And actually right under the Keyword planner is something called display planner and you can use this to find even more keyword suggestions. This is google's platform for finding keyword recommendations for youtube videos and mobile advertisements so the things that you find there might actually be more relevant than the things you find in keyword planner.

You also want to pay extra attention to and that's your description. Like I said at the beginning, you want to start thinking about YouTube as a search engine and not just a place to watch stuff. Treat the description area the same way you would a blog post. They give you a maximum of 5,000 characters which is like 900 words and Google tends to rank longer descriptions higher so use it to your advantage. You just don't want to go crazy with the keywords or you're gonna be penalized for keyword stuffing.

You definitely want to include the word video somewhere in your description and tags and remember that YT videos tend to show up in the search results when someone does a search for tutorial, WT, demo, how to, music, reviews and of course anything followed by the word video.

You'll want to use your web address preferably closer to the start than the end because a lot of people aren't going to finish reading all of it so you wanna have something for them to click on relatively quickly. This can even be the first thing in the description. But remember when you put in your web address you wanna include the http:// and not just yoursite.com. the http is gonna make it clickable.

If you happen to be trying to rank a video for a local business, try to mention your address, location, phone number and of course your web address and you can even include a section after that with a biography of your company and maybe some differentiators that might persuade consumers to choose you above the competition.

In addition to the title and description, you wanna focus on the tags as well and I would suggest using google keyword planner for this too. You get 120 characters worth of tags and you wanna put your best keywords first just like you did with the title.

You can include the name of the business in your tags as well so you can capture people looking for your videos by brand name. plus if you put your brand name in there, YT will be more likely to display your other videos as the related suggestions you see when a video finishes, as long as you put your brand name as a tag in all of your videos.

Lecture 5 04:07

So in addition to using the title, the description, and the tags as a way to create opps for your business to be found, you definitely want to use a transcript or a caption and possibly a translation this a pretty cheap thing to get done.

This is a really thoughtful thing to do for people with hearing disabilities but also means more views and subscriptions from people who speak other languages. I mean if you think about, more than half of the world's websites are in English but the majority of the world doesn't speak English.

Adding a transcript can also be a huge benefit for the search engine rankings and where your video shows up in the results on YouTube. YouTube tends to rank videos with transcripts much higher than videos without them. It actually tends to be the difference between videos on the first page and those on every other page.

You just want to make sure to say the words that you'd like to rank for in the first 5-10 seconds of the video and somewhere in the last 5-10 seconds. So if I was doing a video on how to increase your followers on twitter, I'd want to say the words how to increase your followers on Twitter somewhere in the first and last 5-10 seconds of the video.

Of course you want to make it sound natural, but the point is that when you upload a transcript and Google or YouTube sees those words in the beginning and end, it considers your video an extremely good match for these keywords. And that means you're going to get a higher position in the results which translates to more views, more visitors to your site and ultimately more sales for your business.

I'm going to show you how to upload and match up your video to the transcript in the next video, but I want to show you first how to get transcripts and translation for cheap or free.

The fastest and cheapest site I've seen for transcription and translation services is rev.com. This is $1 per minute of audio for transcription and it doesn't matter what quality it is, if it's bad or excellent, they're gonna do it for a $1 min. Some services will charge more if the audio quality isn't good, but this is just a flat rate.

For translation, it costs 10 cents per word. My advice would be to look at your YouTube analytics which I'm going to show you how to set up near the end of the YouTube section and see what countries your video is most popular in.

If you find a country whose language main language isn't English, you might consider having your video translated into that one so people there can follow along.

Lecture 6 02:23

Go to YouTube, click My Channel, click one of your videos, then click the CC button underneath, select your language, add subtitles or CC, upload file, choose transcript or subtitles

Youll definitely want to include some sort of call-to-action in all of your videos. Dont make anything feel like advertising, but just offer something. That sounds like it should be obvious, but actually its a frequent mistake. Leave some space, like 10 seconds worth, at the end of your video to give people time to click on something else you want them to do.

You can use speech bubbles, notes or labels (move them around so theyre not blocking something important) or other pop-ups to send them to a related topic, a link to your website or your sales page, an article you wrote.

You can even include a large title at the end saying Subscribe to Our Channel. These are the large titles that are typically used to put a title in the beginning of a video but you can use them at the end too.

When somebody subscribes to your channel right after they watch a video, it improves your ranking big time. Ultimately, successful youtube marketing is gonna require reminders and consistency.

Most people dont have any problem following something they like or recommending it to a friend. They just dont usually think about it unless you tell them.

Lecture 11

(NEW) Video Slide-Ins: YouTube's Newest Feature

03:40 Lecture 12 03:24

During the Video

Another effective way of attracting business is to demonstrate something complicated you or your business does within your video. Dont be afraid of giving away your secrets. This is not only gonna help establish you as an expert but usually when someone hears or sees how involved or complicated something is, they ask you to do it for them. Meaning theyll pay you for your services.

People tend to come to YouTube for music, to watch movies, to learn how to do something, reviews, to laugh or to be amazed

Bottom line, if your video is interesting, people will watch. Speaking of emotion, focus on it. If you do nothing else with your video, you want to invoke emotion. Without it, nothing happens. Use humor, controversy, whatever it takes, to elicit emotion. Every part of your video should be designed for maximum emotional appeal. Nothing will make up for boring content.

Music can also make a big difference in whether someone continues watching or leaves. Put one of your favorite movies on mute and see if its still as good. You might even go so far as to ask permission to use a particular song if you think the music is perfect for your intended effect. Music can have a huge effect on the popularity of a video.

Finally, youll want to connect your site with as many other social media sites as you can. Have links easily available for clicking. Share your videos on other all sites at the same time by using OneLoad.com. You can do 10 videos a month with the free option (hulu, vimeo, facebook. After that you have to pay.

Embed the video in your website page and/or on your blog. The number of embeds is another factor that indicates the popularity of videos. Add the video to your Google+ Local page. Once youve added the video there, you and your employees can share the video on your personal Google+ streams

If you decide to buy ads within YouTube, choose the TrueView In-Stream ads. These are the ones you see before most videos that give you the option of skipping the ad after five seconds. However, the great thing about these ads is that you dont have to pay if someone skips the ad or watches less than 30 seconds of it.

These ad videos should ideally be about a minute in length. I have a quick walkthrough of the process for creating an ad. This is just to get you familiar with the interface. Its a lot like the AdWords platform.

YouTube as a Social Media Platform: A Checklist

2 pagesSection 4: Facebook Lecture 20 03:36

Facebook accounts for more than 10% of overall traffic to publishers and has more than 1 billion users, by far the most of any social network.

Im gonna start this tutorial with somewhat of a warning. In an Ad Age article in March 2014, a Facebook spokesperson said that they will be cutting back on the amount of material that people see from companies and brands theyve liked:

Were getting to a place where because more people are sharing more things, the best way to get your stuff seen if youre a business is to pay for it, he said.

Lecture 21 03:49

However, likes will be necessary when you go to target your ads. People who have liked you will convert at much higher levels than random people who see it. It will also help to increase your search engine juice, since likes are the 10th most important factor in Googles algorithm as you can see in the screenshot.

First, start by asking everyone you are close with or might be interested in your business to like your page by sending out a personal post telling them what you plan to do or are doing. Dont send it to people you know have no interest or buy cheap likes from countries or places where you have no market. Thatll just waste your time and wont do much for your business.

Youre probably going to find that the majority of likes you get will come from your blog in other words, organic likes. You can add a facebook like box or a like button by Googling facebook like box. Itll show up as the top choice. You can then change the dimensions, the color, whether to show pictures or not and whether you want to include your posts.

Theres also a link on the same page in case you just want to set up a like button.

Likes, however, can be collected by offering something of value such as whatever you offer on your blog. Once youve collected 30 likes, you can use Facebook Insights and go to the Likes tab to have a better understanding of whether or not likes are working for you.

The Like to Unlock and Share to Unlock plugins are sort of exactly what they sound like. They allow you to lock a certain portion of your article or content until someone likes or shares it.

The TYNT Speedshare button makes it so that if someone highlights something on your page, a little bubble shows up next to the highlighted passage asking them to share it on FB or Twitter. And thats how most people share things by cutting and pasting it.

All of these plugins are free and can be used to promote your material on all of your social media sites. I mention these in the facebook section because fb shares are now the 6th most important factor in the Google search results.

Lecture 22 02:48

As far as getting on the news feed, youll need to post a fair amount. If youre planning to use facebook as a means of spreading your content, be sure that your fans know when they can expect a post.

Train them to expect it but make sure that if you tell them youre going to post everyday that youre confident that you can actually follow through with it. Research firm Social Bakers found that most top brands published once per day. Twice per day saw a drop-off in engagement.

If you want to post something at a later time, you can click on the little clock in the bottom left hand corner or the schedule post in the bottom right hand corner if youre sending something out from a brand page.

You want to make sure that whatever youre putting on the page has some value for your readers. And use a mix of video, audio, text, etc. when you post. Use Buffer to see which gets the higher number of clicks so you can focus on the best one. Look at the times of day when your posts get the most attention as well.

Another way of gaining exposure to a wide variety of potential contacts is to join groups that are related to your product. This also allows you to cross-reference your business and mass post to everyone in the group.

Check out FPTraffic to collect and post pictures automatically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ_ePLQPNhg

When you do use images, you should carefully select the photos that you want to represent your page, and make sure Facebook doesnt choose any photos at random. They could get cropped, or simply be too boring to elicit clicks. Rather, specifically set a size-optimized image that is represents your content well.

You can see some of the optimal dimensions for the homepage on the screenshot. The rest of the optimal dimensions (and theres a lot of em) can be found in the link from Jon Loomer Digital in the resources labeled Optimal Dimensions. Check out his site for great information on facebook advertising.

How to Increase Clicks by Overriding Facebook's Default Images

01:41 Lecture 25 02:05

Some statistics: Short Text posts (under 150 characters) with a question using the word should, would, or which and an emoticon get anywhere from 33% to 100% higher shares, likes and comments. I dont mean to say use all of those things in everything you post, but definitely include one.

According to a Wildfire Interactive study of 10,000 random campaigns, coupons and discounts resulted in more facebook likes than any other type of post.

Shares, on the other hand, increased the most with pick your favorites and quizzes. Eight of the ten most shared articles on the web from Sept 13 to April 14, according to a study by BuzzSumo were quizzes. Shortstack is a great site for creating contests and quizzes.

Facebook posts which include photos drive the most engagement (Likes), anywhere from 39% to 120% more, depending on the study you look at.Images and video are your best bet, with video being the more popular option because it is the most inherently attention grabbing.

But test this out yourself. The numbers will be different for everyone. At a minimum, include an image with every post.

Also be sure to use Facebook Insights to figure out when your fans peak times are, and schedule posts for those times. Always focus your attention on the times of day and days of week when you get maximum visibility. For most, that will mean towards the end of the week.

Theres a study on this too: Adobe tracked 226 billion impressions from 300 large companies and found that Friday was the best day of the week for posting while Sundays were the worst.

Lecture 26 04:26

And before we get into advertisements, I should mention that facebook recently added CTA buttons including Download, Sign Up, shop now, learn more and book now. Youll need to use Power Editor to create these but theyll definitely increase conversions within your ads and posts. Power Editor can be found at https://www.facebook.com/ads/manage/powereditor/

ADVERTISEMENTS

Im really trying to focus this on free methods of getting visitors to your page, e-mail addresses, likes, and all that good stuff but at some point in the future youll be using ads. Im just going to give you the basics here.

Once youve built up a fan base (i.e. a solid number of likes) focus your ads on targeting those fans. Your conversions will be much higher. Consider using a Custom Audience or a Lookalike Audience. A custom audience is where you upload your e-mail address list to try to get those people to like your page.

According to the company Lookalike audiences help you reach people who are similar to your current customers for fan acquisition, site registration, off-Facebook purchases, coupon claims and brand awareness.

But lets take a look at the two most common types of facebook ads:

1- Facebook sidebar ads using faces tend to perform very well. Better than logos or text. People like seeing smiling faces. Ads with female faces perform better than text or logos just about anywhere on your homepage too. And especially because this is FACEbook.

Sidebar ads will display who else you know that is interested in the page. You get an image, 25 characters for the headline and 90 characters for the text. The best part is they stay with the reader as they scroll down the newsfeed and facebook just updated them so they appear bigger and you see fewer of them.

Newsfeed ads however are still bigger and less likely to be ignored since they look like a regular post. But of course, they disappear the second you scroll past them. My advice would be to test each and see which gives you the highest ROI.

A great way to get more conversions is to use a service called Perfect Audience. This targets people who have visited a certain webpage your blog, for instance on facebook so that you know youre reaching someone who had an initial interest in your niche or at least is familiar with your brand.

Finally, Facebook Ads also has a really useful tool within Ads Manager called Reports. Its located in the left column as you can see in the screenshot. When you click on that and then click edit columns, it gives you the option of seeing how effective your ads are based on whatever demographic you choose: gender, age, and placement.

Basically, where did you request your ads to show up. Thisll save you a lot of money if you find out your ads arent attracting any females over the age of 45, for example. Or maybe putting them on the left side versus the right side works more effectively. Itll be different for every business but its a huge asset to have for better conversions.

Just to get you familiar with Facebook Ads, Im going to walk you through an ad creation on facebook.

Pinterest has more than 70 million users, and drove 3.68% of traffic to publishers in September 2012, the second highest of the social networks. In fact, Pinterest's share of overall visits increased by 66% year-over-year, more than any other social network.

Pinterest now drives more traffic to publishers than Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit and Google+ combined. Users are comprised of between 70%-80% women, mostly upper middle class. People are usually on Pinterest for one of two reasons: to find inspiration, and to shop. As an entrepreneur, you can take advantage of both.

Pinterest can help market any brand. Pin industry infographics, charts, slides, or other visual elements. About 80% of pins are repins so start creating original material. Every original pin you post has a link back to your site, which drives traffic when people repin and ultimately builds up your e-mail list and boosts sales.

Basically, most people log onto Pinterest, take a look at their newsfeed, and repin. They dont necessarily pin new things. So you have a huge opportunity to promote your brand here.

So how do you create a unique board that people want to follow and repin? Aesthetically speaking, tall photos look better on Pinterest than fat ones, but not so long that users cant see the repin button when they get to the bottom of the image. The pin-it is at the top so this will lower its chances of getting repined.

Plus, if you cant see the image without scrolling down, its less likely to be shared too. Cropping photos can help with this.

While you want to stand out, dont make things overly complex by cramming too many details into any single one of your posts. You want to look sleek, not cluttered. Next, post what youre familiar with. If you post a photo of something interesting, be sure to tell everyone why you think its interesting or ask a question.

You can even put up a close-up of something related to your category and ask what people think it is. Turn it into a contest. You want to generate conversation. Thisll leads to more followers and more people repinning your posts.

Consider creating a niche board. Cars would be too broad but Lamborghinis or Ferraris would provide a more dedicated fan base and result in more exposure and more repins. Just dont overpin. People will stop following you if you overpin.

Group boards, otherwise known as community or shared boards, are Pinterest boards where multiple users can contribute. They are differentiated from personal boards by the gray people icon located at the top right corner of the board. These group boards are a great way to meet other pinners, increase exposure, and engage people with your pins.

If you want to use boards strategically to target those in your business or industry, try using a program called Board Deck. At boarddeckhq.com This provides you with important metrics like group board followers, collaborators, total pins, number of repins, creator,(change order look at this on Board Deck) and last update, so you have a clear idea of the boards exact purpose, activity, and popularity. To join, you usually just have to reach out to the creator and ask.

In terms of getting followers, the top three factors according to a University of Minnesota study are the number of people you follow, the number of original pins you put up and the number of boards youve created.

Lecture 31 02:41

Before you start using Pinterest for business, there's a few things you'll want to do.

Verification is not only going to build the trust of other pinners, but it will put your profile picture next to anything that's repinned from you and give you access to Pinterest analytics.

You'll also want to integrate Pinterest with your other social media networks. And include a link on your site or wherever you post back to your pinterest page.

Lecture 32 03:31

I would also recommend creating a business account so that you can take advantage of something called rich pins. https://www.pinterest.com/business/create/

There are six types of rich pins:

App, movie, recipe, article, product and place.

If you're selling products, or even repinning products relevant to your business, this allows you to show the price, and especially for your products, because according to a study of 25,000 Shopify online stores, images with prices get 36% more likes than those without price tags. They also found that Pinterest traffic resulted in average orders that were double that of facebook and more than amazon and basic organic search.

So people on pinterest spend more money and you can get them to spend more money by including a price on your pin.

If you want to see all of the stuff that people have pinned from your page, you just go to your URL field in your browser and you put in pinterest.com/source/yourwebsite.com

Pinterest then looks at all of its images and displays everything's of yours that's been re-pinned by other people. It's gonna give you a great visual idea of which of your pins are the most popular. If you want to get real data, however, that you can use to drive traffic and sales for your business, you'll certainly want to keep an eye on your analytics each week.

Their analytics will tell you how many people visit your website from your pinterest page, how popular your pins are, what's being repinned from your website and stats on your followers and boards. Simply speaking, looking at this data is going to give you more information about your potential customers, what else they're pinning, liking, and commenting on and what types of images are working best for your business.

And so in the next video, we're going to take a look at your analytics dashboard.

Lecture 33

Pinterest Analytics Walkthrough

Text Lecture 34 02:53

Ive seen a number of studies about the best time to pin on Pinterest but they all seem to overlap around 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST or between 8 pm and 1am.

Analytics firm Curalate looked at 500,000 pins on Pinterest and found some interesting data.

Taller (3x taller than wide), high contrast, rough textured (think pine cone versus an orange), lighter as opposed to darker and those with several dominant colors received between 60% and 17 times more repins than the opposite. Pins without a face attracted 25% more pins while those using reds or oranges were repined twice as much.

According to a Georgia Tech Univ study of 2.5 million pins, the most repined words within your description or over top of your image, were DIY as in do it yourself especially using photo badges which is text over the top of an image (How to Make Baskets Like a Champ), the heart symbol, cup, cute, recipe, dress and idea, in that order. I'm assuming that if you're here, you're familiar with Twitter's basic function. It gives you 140 characters to say whatever you want. To go past the basics and start using Twitter to build your business, you can add your business profile to your personal Twitter profile bio, and get your employees to do the same.

This is a great idea because @profiles that appear in your twitter bio are clickable. Therefore anyone who checks out your profile also has the opportunity to check out your business profile too.

You can also add a number of different hashtags so that people who search for those words possibly see your page in the results. Once you get yourself going, be sure to feature your Twitter handle prominently on your website and in all your marketing materials so you can build your following. Put a CTA in your bio, too. Send them to your blog or a recent article

To reach the maximum number of people, you'll want to build your Twitter network. For those of you who are new to Twitter and at a little bit of a loss as to how to get followers, first start with friends who you think would be interested and then try these techniques.

The first of these is the follow-first rule. You follow someone, and then, as a courtesy, they follow you. This is by far the most common way to get followers.

You can go to FollowerWonk and type in a keyword related to your business and it will sort the results by the number of followers. You can also use Twitonomy, type in the Twitter handle and you get a TON of data on that person.

Lecture 39 03:02

To create a list, click on your profile image, go down to list, create a new list and then to add people to your list, you go to their page, click on the gear icon and choose add or remove from list.

Follow a celebrity or at least a semi-celebrity within your category, and they tweet you about them. This allows you to keep up on the ongoings of various people that may be relevant to your own tweets.

With regards to tweeting, pay attention to the material from influential people in your niche thats getting the most re-tweets, then create a post mentioning their material using the block quote feature on most blogs, which you can do before you post something by clicking the quotation marks or inverted commas for all my British homies just like you see in the screenshot. This way, their passage stands out and itll boost their ego.

Then just let them know by giving a shout-out with an at symbol and their Twitter handle and include the quote in your tweet. This is a good way to get on their radar. You can even write a counter-argument. The more controversial, the better. I mean be polite, but if they respond to it, youve just gained their entire audience.

On the other side, there is a free service called Unfollowers that has about 9 million users. It lets you track the people that unfollow you so you can get better data on why people walk out on you. You can also see which followers are inactive, your followers statistics how many tweets, retweets, etc., people you follow but dont follow you back.

Lecture 40

2 Programs to Automate Tweeting

02:33 Lecture 41 03:42

To get retweets, basically your goal is to attract attention to yourself. You could hold a contest, take a poll, You could also make a Twitter-only free offer using You could offer a discount on some service or product you offer by including a hashtag (coupon)(discount)(deal). Offer it three or four times throughout the day since a lot of your followers wont see it the first time.

See which idea creates the largest number of retweets. You should also use Twitter to get ideas for posts. Ask your followers questions about what theyd like to see your business do. Ask them if they have any questions.

Search for #contest, #promotion, #event #winner #offer with the Advanced search option on Twitter to find even more ideas. Give people two entries for retweets

Just remember that Twitter is a special kind of social media and you need to attract your readers in less space and time so spend as much time crafting each tweet as you do creating headlines for your articles. People scan tweets like they scan the titles of news stories so you have to grab their attention quickly.

Check out Upworthys technique, sometimes referred to as the two phrase headline: Someone gave some kids some scissors. Heres what happened next. Some people call it link bait, To me, thats just good marketing

Check out aminstitute.com/headline

Though Twitter is great at building awareness and starting conversations, its inherent brevity makes it one of the more passive forms of media. I recommend bridging it with other types.

You can do this through tweets via programs such as Yfrog, which is a popular photo sharing service, AudioBoom, which is great for audio files, and of course YouTube. Beyond this, Make sure to link your Twitter profile with your other social media networks.

Optimal image sizes

Twitter cards are also not as common as you would think even though theyve been out now for more than two years. This lets you add larger images or cards to your posts and allow you to have more than 140 characters. Its a way of giving your readers a better preview of your material.

You can use a Twitter card to include a picture with your story, your product, a gallery card which is four large pictures in one, a card to include audio or video or one to drive traffic to your website.

You can see a couple examples in the screenshot here. This is good because it automatically provides credit when someone retweets your picture. Sometimes people retweet without an (at) or (via).

To set this up, go into your Wordpress dashboard, go down to plugins and search for twitter card. The top two options are Twitter Meta Generator. I like the Generator better, because it gives you the option to use Summary,

Text Lecture 44 03:18

You can also give yourself a headstart using some statistics:

Dan Zarrella at Hubspot has found that tweets with URLs in them between 120 and 130 characters received up to 4 times as many retweets as those between 50 and 80 characters long, which had the lowest CTR. If youre trying to keep your tweet in that sweetspot of 120 and 130 characters, you can go to bitly.com, paste your long link and itll shorten it up for you.

Dans study further showed tweets posted after 2 pm but not during dinner time (between 6 & 7). between Thursday and Sunday (towards the end of the week) using the words please help, please retweet, or please anything, using two or fewer hashtags tended to be retweeted the most (15x as much as non RT posts) and also had the highest CTRs.

Moreover, retweets were higher between 8 and 9 when people are in traffic or checking their social media and email accounts before work. Asking for a re-tweet using the actual word retweet instead of the letters RT also boosted sharing.

In a study of more than 2,000,000 tweets by Twitter, it was found that posts with photos were retweeted the most, followed by videos and then quotes. Which is good because in November of 2013, Twitter increased the size of its images and made them expandable, which will keep people on your Twitter page longer since they wont have to leave to see certain posts.

And finally, a small study by Tom Tunguz on reposting the same content at a different date resulted in about 75% as many retweets as the first post so dont be afraid to re-post successful content for even more shares. You can do it more than once, too. Just change up the image and the title a little and it looks like a new tweet.

The reason it continues to get retweets the second or even third time is because some people werent following you when you posted it the first time, some are in different time zones, some people miss it and maybe some people wanted to share it but were distracted or didnt think of it the first time.

Its a pretty underutilized strategy that you should take advantage of. All of these statistics and strategies are not going to work for every blog or company but they are a good starting point.

You want to pay attention to your analytics and figure out what times of the day, what type of content and what strategies work best for you and your business. And you can do that fairly easily by signing up for Buffer at bufferapp.com.

This is a free service that gives you the ability to handle all your social media accounts from one spot and also gives you statistics for each site. Once youve signed up for Buffer, you can tweet any pic just by right clicking and choosing Buffer This Image.

You can set up Buffer to schedule all of your posts for you so you dont have to remember to post at certain times of the day.

And dont be afraid to have Buffer send out several tweets per day. The life of a tweet is short something around 30-45 seconds. Mix it up with the type of content youre linking to. Then use Buffer to see which type of tweet gets the most favorites, retweets, and clicks.

There is a link in the resources to the 16 best free Twitter analytical tools in the resources. It all depends on what youre looking to analyze. the best time to tweet for maximum exposure, the words you use that create the highest number of RTs, who retweets you the most, how often you tweet, demographics statistics, etc.

Some of these ideas, particularly within Google+ might require your local techie, but I wanted you to be aware of them. Really all they require is a bit of code in your blog page, which you can just copy and paste in there.

360m users second most of all social media sites. Google+ has some incredibly useful offerings for businesses. First thing I would do if you havent:

1.Sign up for a Google+ Business page, so you show up on the map:

http://www.google.com/business/

2.Sign up for a Google Local+ page, which allows you to link your business page google+ account, Itll alsogive you the chance to collect reviews from customers, which will boost your search ranking.

https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1713911?hl=en

You then need to verify your business and local pages by having a postcard sent to your location or getting a phone call eliminates fake accounts. Once youve been verified, your latest content will appear to the right of search results any time someone searches you. And after a few hours, the two will be linked. Dont use a PO Box or 1800 number.

If youre trying to build a personal brand or representing your startup, include your picture in the profile photo, not the company logo. People feel more connected with a face. Marketing is moving away from buildings and logos to people and personal connections. Remember to name your profile photo and any other photo you upload for a post with the optimal keywords for your business. Or with your business name. Rank higher in search. Really, any pictures you upload to Google+ should use keywords in the name of the file.

Include a caption under your name with a link to your site.

Participate more inside communities. From that engagement, build smaller communities of highly engaged followers who are interested in your services. when you post to your profile, and only have 100 followers, fewer people are likely to see your post than if you posted it inside a community of 1,000 members. However there are moderators that can delete your post if they think its spam or advertising. You can get around this by Create a new public community. To find communities, go to https://plus.google.com/communities

Every time you post on Google+, it will operate like a blog post, and Google will display the first few words of every postwhen they come up in searches, so give a little more thought to the headlines and first few sentences you use in your posts. since you get an individual URL for all your posts you should also share all of your Google+ posts on other social networks or link back to them

Google+ posts are also more interactive than facebook posts, and you can choose from a list of over 100 actions to imbed in your post in order to get viewers involved. Another tip is that rather than setting a post to be visible to the general public, you can make it specific to one of your circles. This can be a powerful but dangerous tool, as people in this circle you specify will get a notification that youve posted, thereby doing some of your marketing for you, but also potentially coming off like spam if overused. You should also know that when people comment on your posts, theyll have the option of sharing the post with their own followers, which can greatly increase your exposure.

Interactive posts have 3x the click through rate as normal posts in Google+ according to the company.

And then theres something similar to the Like box for Google+. This is the add to circles button also called the Google Badge. Its really cool looking as you can see in the screenshot. You can add this to your blog so people can add you to their circles, which as I mentioned before is going to improve your Google search results ranking significantly. You can customize it to appear dark if you want to add some contrast to a white website and you can also change the size.

Lecture 53

Optimizing Your Google+ Brand Page & Posts

03:17 Lecture 54 04:28

Obviously, using Google+ will definitely help you out just for its relationship to gmail. with Google+ you can add actions and messages to gmails, which get rendered as buttons in the subject line of the message so they dont have to open the e-mail, click the link have it open in another tab and ultimately ruin their day.

This is valuable on mobile too, so the user wont even have to open another window to confirm their e-mail address. They can RSVP for a webinar or other event, confirm their e-mail and even transfer money to your account if they want to.

Youll just have to add a bit of code to your page, so if you have a friend or employee whos a techie, you might want to have them handle the process. Otherwise, though, its a great feature that can go a long way to further your business.

Also, while this is of course very helpful, its still best to include a regular link in the body or send the action-version of the email only to gmail addresses, because not everyone uses gmail. So when youre using it, be sure to keep that in mind.

Theres also a feature is called Wallet, which is only available in the U.S. and limited to $1,800 purchases. allows customers to have one-click buying capability on your site, since according to statistics from 27 different web research platforms, 68% of all shopping carts are abandoned. Giving consumers fewer steps to purchase something increases conversions.

After users sign in with Google on the web, they can choose to install your Android app instantly, over the air, without leaving your website. When a client signs into a site for the first time through Google+, the site can offer your app if its free, it must be published in the Google Play store, and it must meet a quality threshold. This threshold is determined by Google and is subject to change.

New apps might take some time to surpass the quality threshold.. It looks like this (show screenshot here) and increases CTR by up to 40%.

Google+ analytics is unique among social media sites in that it tells you exactly how many unique visitors you have regardless of what device or where they sign in from, which eliminates the problem of double counting data.

2 pagesSection 8: Quora Lecture 58 02:25

Quora is a less-well-known social media site and not quite as dynamic for internet marketing as some of the others but still a powerful one if used the right way and for the right purposes. Quora is like Yahoo! Answers, except it doesnt look like a Craigslist ad. It ranks high in Googles results because of the quality, the user engagement, and because of its reputation. Its become a trusted resource within Googles search engine. You can see for a handful of random questions, Quora comes up in the top results every time:.

First thing is to have a profile with an image. If youre going to be answering questions under multiple topics, I would create an account for each niche you plan on covering. Thisll build authority more since people are probably going to look at your profile if they like your answer and somewhat subconsciously score your answer depending on the credibility indicators they see. Make sure to have your name followed by your company or whatever youre trying to promote like John Smith, Marketing Specialists. Thats just free advertising.

The key to building your Quora reputation is to focus on your niche and answer questions you know a lot about. Set aside some time each week to answer questions. When you help out other people in the Quora community, you drive traffic to your site and build your business. The most popular people get more than 1 million views per answer, but even less well-known niche answerers can get between 25,000 and 100,000 views per answer so it can be a very powerful thing for your visibility.

You should also link up your Quora account with your Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tumblr and WordPress accounts also allows you to share your answers across all of your social media platforms. Just go to your settings and then account and enable all five. You can set it up so that immediately after youve answered or posed a question, an automatic update will show up in your other platforms. You can even embed an answer on your blog

"You can get the HTML code for any answer or post on Quora by selecting content you want to embed using your mouse. Click on the "Embed Quote" button that will pop up beside your selection. A dialog will appear showing you a preview of how the embedded content will look like, and give you the HTML code for embedding that answer or post." - Kah Seng Tay

The service even allows you to set up the layout you want displayed -- users can can choose between a narrow or original layout, and even select the exact excerpt of the text desired."

Lecture 59 04:52

Answering questions requires a mix of things. The best answers generally start with a little bit of wit (you want to hook them with the first sentence), even a provocative statement, something funny, even a mild jab at the asker, or a personal story make sure your response has relevant keywords for your niche. Personal stories will take the longest to develop but the more work you put into your answer the better readers response will be. The length of your answer will also attract more upvotes. Longer answers score higher. I would follow your opening with plenty of specific references, statistics, details and of course the answer. Whatever you do, dont be boring. Treat it like a short blog post.

Some people recommend answering questions as quickly as possible after theyve been posted. That way the question will be fresh in the askers mind, and theyll be more likely to upvote your answer or engage you further. Getting there first also means that you wont have to compete against other answersyou certainly dont want to repeat someone elses ideas. Further, if answers within the same question have the same number of upvotes, the older answers tend to stay closer to the top, meaning fresh eyes and more readers! I think that if you have the best answer, it will be noticed. There is not much chance that you have the exact number of upvotes than another person. Quality over speed or quantity. Take your time several hours if you need to.

Ive even seen answers that cut off after the first paragraph or in the middle of a sentence or particularly interesting part of the answer that link to their webpage. This has to be done with subtlety. You might get down votes from people who didnt want to expend the energy to go to your site or see it a cheap promotion tactic.

If youre going to try to direct the reader to an outside source, I would give an answer to their question but include sort of a call-to-action at the end, saying something along the lines of Theres actually a great post on that here: or this post has an extremely in-depth response on that. Link to your blog or a video on YouTube with a step-by-step process if the question is applicable.

By the way, if you see what you consider to be dumb questions on Quora, try to resist the urge to give sarcastic, condescending answers. Remember, youre representing your company and although people tend to be rather ruthless because of the usually anonymous nature of the internet, youre using your real name on Quora and trying to create a good reputation. Plus, rude answers tend to be erased by moderators or downvoted so its not even worth your time.

If you answer questions well and make it easy to understand and people will come to you. This can be used to find sales opportunities: People are lazy. Theyd rather pay people to do things for them. If they see your expertise within some niche, thats exactly what theyll do. Bottom line, the majority of people on Quora are not experts in your industry. Theyre coming to Quora to find answers to their questions, not answer themselves. Use that to your advantage.

Another strategy would be to create questions with a fake account about your topic or company if youre well-known enough, answer them with the account you have for that particular niche. Answers given by people closest to the company tend to rate the highest. I dont think this is unethical either. Youre providing people with inside knowledge of a topic they might be interested in. Plus, everyone answering questions on Quora is in the business of self-promotion. Theres no reason to wait or hope that someone asks a question that you think would be useful for people within that niche to know the answer to.

Go to your topic of expertise, find the unanswered question with the most followers, and write an answer.

Lecture 60 02:44

Look at Stephen Fry and Dustin Moskovitzs answers. They are ranked number 1 and 2 for attaining the most followers with the fewest posts. In other words theyre the most efficient Quora answerers out there. Break down their answers and emulate them. Theres a link to a Quora question that asked what answer on Quora have the most upvotes. Look at those answers and see what makes them stand out.

Check out straightdope.com for great ideas on how craft great responses

Images will help you get your point across. Some users will go as far as to create unique images for each post. In a list view of answers, the first photo in a post will appear as a thumbnail beside the text preview. Readers are a naturally drawn to images, and this will entice them to click through and read what you have to say.

Lecture 61 02:37

Ive been focusing a lot on how to get noticed by answering questions, its probably good to mention that asking questions can be just as important. If you ask the right questions, people will be attracted to that. You can be known as a leader in your niche by the strength of your questions. Look at the kinds of questions people within your niche and people with high numbers of upvotes ask. Theyre usually not your typical LMGTFY type of questions. And be sure to follow these influential people, too and anyone else that gives great answers. Follows on Quora are going to be a little like follows on Twitter. I follow you, you follow me. You show me yours, Ill show you mine.

Theres also an Ask to Answer option on Quora. So you can specifically target someone to answer your question. This gets you on their radar if they happen to be useful or influential for your business. You could even use this to ask someone for their opinion. Asking questions also helps you create material for your blog. It can give you ideas for posts, and connect you with people who comment. Ask questions to gauge interest in certain topics. For example, What do you consider the best? You can see who viewed your answer and their profile to get demographic information. Start answering the questions theyre following. If ever they choose to like or comment on one of your answers, then reach out to them with a direct message.

Quora has analytics as well, which you will probably be interested in looking at. By visiting your Stats page at quora.com/stats, you can obtain an overall assessment of how many viewed, upvoted, followed, and shared their questions and answers youve had. A quick glance through these stats will tell you which avenues can give you the most coverage.

Lecture 62

Checklist & Resources for Quora

1 pageSection 9: LinkedIn Lecture 63 04:22

LinkedIn is more effective for B2B than B2C and I think the majority of you are going to be selling to consumers so Im gonna keep this section relatively short. You wont want this to be a cut and paste version of your resume. You want to get it noticed, by both people and searches. Treat it like a professional version of a profile youd put on a dating website. You want to show off your stuff but you need to stand out at the same time.

Every bum out theres gonna be putting team player, strategically proactive, reliable and determined so be original. The section right next to your photo is going to be the most important part of your profile. Its the only part that shows up in the search results and the first thing people look at when they check out your profile.

Instead of a job title and company, put some numbers in there. How many thousands or millions of dollars worth of sales have you contributed to or created? Write something that gets attention.

When you list your jobs and descriptions, take the space you need to communicate your accomplishments by creating multiple entries for every role you have performed within each job title. Its ok to have overlapping dates. And when youre finished, reorder the content in your profile. This will enable you to lead with your most important experience.

Dont feel you need to include every detail of every job you have had. Instead, focus on building the brand image you want. Youll want to write as though youre having a conversation with someone. Let your personality shine, and dont be shy about your values and passions.

Be sure to include your activities outside of work too. You want people to feel as if they know you.

In the section for Skills and Expertise, youll want to start by figuring out the top 5-10 strengths for which you want to be recognized and use them in your profile repeatedly. If your top skill is project management, for instance, describe your project management proficiency in your summary as well as in multiple experience descriptions. This will amplify your message and help to optimize the keywords and areas youre hoping to be recognized as an expert in.

These are not going to give you much link juice but you can add three websites to your profile. Be sure to use the Other option so you can customize the text of your link descriptions. Otherwise, youll be stuck with company and personal website. Use keywords you want to be associated with.

A couple of other quick things about your profile--first, this is not the place to run a casual snapshot. Your picture should be high quality, with good lighting and sharp focus. If you dont have a professional photo, invest in one.

Be sure to make it the same headshot you use on other profiles (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc.) so that people connected to you elsewhere will recognize you easily on LinkedIn as well.

Two remaining tips for your profile--Dont assume others know how you spell your name or know that youve changed your name. Include all known misspellings, previous names, nicknames and aliases in your summary. I include this: AKA/Common misspellings: and then every misspelling of my name I can think of.

Additionally, if you have a profile youre terrified to use because of what your current boss might say if he found out, raise your security settings. Just change the setting for select who can see your activity feed to only you.

Fly under the radar when youre using LinkedIn to check out your employees or poach talent. To keep your agenda hidden, change your viewing setting to anonymous in Select what others see when youve viewed their profile.

Lecture 64 03:42

Now that you know how to create the perfect profile, lets talk more about how to use it to your advantage within the site. I hate letting any service have my social media credentials but in LinkedIns case, its going to get you some contacts that you can use to get recommendations and build up your credibility.

Try to get at least 500 connections. In addition to widening your target audience, the magic 500+ in your profile has a psychological impact on those who view your profile. Each week, set aside some time to look through the profiles of 100 or so people that could be beneficial to your business or that work in the same field and reach out to 10 of them with a personalized message.

Start a conversation or if you happen to be in the same area, invite them out for a drink. Personal connections are much more powerful for business than virtual ones.

Once you have a significant amount of contacts, start endorsing people for their skills. LinkedIn is a little like Twitter in that theres a lot of reciprocation with recommendations and endorsements. You can also go to your Recommendations Manager and run a campaign that reaches out to the people who know you and ask them to provide recommendations and endorse you for your top skills again using a personalized note. Thisll take longer but itll have a higher success rate.

Having the highest number of endorsements for your signature strengths will influence those who are looking at your profile. Once you have recommendations and endorsements, have the courage to delete or reject the endorsements that arent central to how you want to be known.

When youre doing the same for others, only give recommendations and endorsements to those whom you genuinely admire--when you recommend other people, their reputation is seen an extension of your values.

Next, lets talk about LinkedIn groups, and how they can benefit you. With a LinkedIn group, you have the ability to message other members once a week, which is a great way to deliver special promotions or campaigns. You can use the sharing widget to mass post to groups youre a member of.

Be sure to join active groups with a lot of members that are related to your area of expertise, industry, alumni, passions, social causes, and other aspects of your identity. This will give you access to more people who matter to your brand. Plus, when others look at your profile, they can learn about your brand by looking at your groups.

You can also consider starting your own group to create the conversations you would want to have with potential customers. Remember, the more active you are in groups, the more visible you become. And I cant say this enough, good headlines are a must for your group posts or anywhere you post. And dont be afraid to leave a link to something youd like the group to check out.

Finally, consider creating a profile for your company using the Add a Company link I have for you in the resources. By creating a company profile, you not only grow your online presence, but also give LinkedIn members the opportunity to connect if they work for/with you, as well as follow your company so they can see any company updates.

You can set up your own company profile quickly with a short bio, link to your website, and logo or photograph. You can also search for companies that have already created a profile, and can filter the results by city, company size, and more. This is a great way to find potential partners and organizations that might need your help.

With a company profile, you can also show off your businesss products and services. LinkedIn lets you add a description, a link and a video to all of your products and services. You can also add a recommend button to each of these pages so people can refer you.

Once youve finished creating profiles for you and your business, link your profile to your blog and vice versa. Wordpress will let you link them so that when you post something, it will automatically show up on LinkedIn. Consider putting a link to your profile in your email signature and on your business cards.
