YouTube is a great free resource for you to use to promote your business, idea or cat. In this course, I'll teach you how to create you first video, upload it to your channel, and share it with your friends or the entire world.
Like all Udemy courses, this class is made up of sections and lectures. Be sure to pause the lectures often to work on creating your first video and following the steps on your computer.
You can expect to create a similar video to this after you complete this course. It's a simple "talking head" video with minimal editing. This course won't cover fancy cameras, special effects or graphics.
You need very little equipment to make your first video and upload to YouTube.
You need a webcam. These are built into most laptops, and some desktop monitors have them built in. You can also purchase a separate webcam and connect it to your computer. You can see more options on my website: http://www.authenticwestfilms.com/blog/uncategorized/youtube-101-on-udemy/
You can also use an iPhone or iPad to create your first video. This course only covers using the free tools available from YouTube. There is an app built into Android devices, but I don't cover that app in this course.
You can test your webcam here: http://www.testmycam.net/
To upload your video, you'll need a connection to the Internet. This can be wired, WIFI or over the cellular network.
To create a video with the method explained in this course, you need to be connected to the Internet during the recording process. But there are ways to record offline and upload at a later time.
You must be at least 13 years old to create a YouTube Channel
You need a Google + account to upload your video to YouTube. You'll also get access to many free tools when you create this account.

You can record your video directly to the YouTube website while connected to the Internet, using your computer or iPhone.
There are a few common mistakes beginners make - avoid these:
- putting your head in the center of the frame
- recording in front of a bright window
- not having the camera level

Editing is not necessary, but a few minutes of editing can drastically improve your video. This course covers basic editing: trimming the beginning and end of your video.

Meta Data is just a fancy word for your title, description and tags. Meta data is important because search engines can't "watch" your video, so you need to use Meta data to describe your content, making it possible for people to find your video online.
Show you how: Add Basic Meta Data (Title, Description, Tags and Thumbnail)
Show you how: Add Advanced Meta Data
YouTube allows you to control how public your video is.
- Public - available to anyone on the Internet
- Unlisted - available only to people that have access to the URL
- Private - available only to G+ users that you share with.
They also provide a number of tools to share your video with social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc.
We all dream about posting a viral video that gets millions of views. But that's not very common. And it's more important to get your video in front of the right people than in front of millions of people that may or may not be your target audience.
Show you how: Public, Private and Unlisted
Some people will find your video by searching the Internet. But sharing your video via social media is important to attract viewers.
Thank you for taking this class! If you have any questions of comments, please leave those in the discussion section. I'd love to hear your feedback. And I hope to see you in YouTube 201, the advanced course that I'm building now.
