Social Media for Churches: The Basics

Section 2: Social Media Marketing Lecture 2 19:27

Key themes of this class:

  • Understanding the use of social media for churches
  • Learning about social networks and the powerhouse marketing tools that they offer
  • How to create and share compelling content (the ultimate driver behind marketing)

We'll be answering some key questions, like: how do we set effective goals? Is there anything wrong with a church doing marketing? How do I get the right Biblical motivation to be a master at perception management?

Lecture 3 10:42

Want to do more to learn about our task of "being all things to all people"? Keep studying to find out! You'll learn about:

  • Principles from 1 Corinthians 9
  • Methods that Paul used when evangelizing
  • How the Bible speaks about doing market research
  • And much more!

How do I learn where people are at so I can most effectively reach them? Is it possible to reach a demographically broad audience? Is it ok to sometimes focus my efforts on one demographic? Get answers for these questions and more by watching the videos!

In this lecture, we'll start out by discussing:

  • What is media?
  • What is social media marketing?
  • Understanding relationships in marketing
  • The concept of "tribes" and "tribe management"

To provide for your tribe, you'll have to learn about content creation, content curation, information provisions, and problem solving!

    Hope you're ready to learn more, in section two of The Basics of Social Media! We'll continue discussing concept of providing useful contentthe real reason your follows will follow you, and how you'll be able to share your message. Providing useful content includes:

    Knowing who you are

    Understanding demographics

    Setting goals and creating plans

    Setting up and learning analytics and testing

    Establishing credibility

    Truly communicating

    Would you believe there's still more? That's okay, I've got you covered in the next lecture, as we progress from talking about social media in general to media and how it pertains to church communication!

In the final section of part one, we'll talk about tying it all together, understanding personas, and setting up/planning our communication.

When it comes to tying everything together, do these things:

  • Be "all in"
  • Have a clear focus
  • Meet generational needs
  • Be missional and evangelistic
  • Plan

As for personas, understand that they are "archetypal characters created to represent different people within a demographic," according to HubSpot. This is important to learn, as we'll be focusing our efforts on those specfic personas we'll create.

Section 3: Navigating Key Social Networks Lecture 7 17:15

In this class, we'll be taking a tour of Facebook! In the Facebook class, you'll learn about:

  • Demographics and stats of Facebook
  • Facebook tips and best practices
  • Tour of the Facebook profile
  • Tour of the Facebook page
  • And exploring the Facebook ads panel

The tour of the Facebook Page will show you every step of the process, from start to finish when it comes to setting up your account!

Welcome to the introduction to Twitter! In this class, we'll be covering:

  • An introduction to Twitter
  • A tour of Twitter
  • Twitter best practices and tips
  • Twitter ads

We'll be going over everything from hashtags to setting up an account to making responsive ads!

In Twitter part two, we'll be learning all about Twitter best practices, as well as setting up some awesome ads!

Lecture 12 14:32

In the last lecture of this module, we'll be talking about the rest of the major social networks, including:

  • Google Plus
  • YouTube
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • LinkedIn

For each of these networks, we'll be asking three key questions: 1) What is it? 2) Is it worth your time? 3) How do I use it effectively?

Section 4: Building Web Presence Lecture 13 16:50

In this class, we'll be covering the basics of discovering the branding for our church. We'll be going over topics like:

  • What is branding?
  • What branding includes (visuals, communication "voice," consistency)
  • Examples of poor branding (no/poor familiarity or attribution)
  • Creating a value proposition
  • And the essentials of branding

In part two of our set of branding lessons, we're going over branding best practices. We'll be wrapping up by remembering three key branding principles: 1) be clear with your messages 2) remember the importance of first impressions 3) get feedback.

In this lecture, we'll be going over what it takes to build an effective social media hub for your audience. Our topics for this lesson include:

  • Creating a "connect with us" page on your website
  • Setting up a Google Maps Local listing
  • Setting up the Facebook check-in feature
  • Claiming our Yelp listing
  • and setting up our YouVersion Live profile and events.

For this quick video, we'll be going over how to set up HootSuite as your social media dashboard. We'll be covering how to set up streams, accounts, analytics, and scheduled posts!

Lecture 17 16:08

Our two main sections that we'll be covering in this lecture are: 1) what is the purpose of your website? 2) and why our website needs to be our home base. We'll be covering point one of "What's the point of a website," which is to provide information.

Lecture 18 10:20

For our final lecture, we'll be talking finishing our five points about the purpose of a website:

  • Provides information
  • Establishes legitimacy
  • Provides/help service
  • "Landing area" for all media
  • Is a platform of your own

Lastly, we'll be going over the phases of website production, which are the planning phase, functioning phase, building phase, training phase, and the upkeeping phase.
